MEDIOEVAL CASTLE OF CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA

PARTNER

Dating back to around the year 1000, this ancient medieval castle has been carefully restored to preserve its historic character while offering a refined and fully functional setting for exclusive events. The layout of the estate is designed to create a sense of anticipation, leading guests gradually through a succession of evocative spaces, each revealing new perspectives, architectural details and breathtaking views.

The experience begins in the Corte d’Onore (Courtyard of Honour), dominated by ancient crenellated towers and featuring a remarkable 14th-century well. Passing through a characteristic stone archway, guests reach the first garden, landscaped with evergreen plants and mature trees, where a magnificent view opens towards the Lattari Mountains.

A monumental stone staircase then leads to the second garden, where a historic fishpond and ancient fountains create an enchanting atmosphere, in perfect harmony with the surrounding architecture and nature. From this panoramic terrace, the view stretches across the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum, following the coastline as far as the eye can see. At sunset and in the evening, the coastline comes alive with thousands of lights, creating a spectacular and unforgettable backdrop.

The journey continues through a passageway carved into the castle’s original 15th-century defensive bastion, leading to what was once the castle moat. Today, this historic area has been transformed into a lush olive grove garden, overlooking the sea and Mount Vesuvius.

Here guests will find the evocative Jardin d’Hiver, an elegant and versatile space ideal for receptions, gala dinners and events, accommodating up to 280 guests seated at tables.

From the courtyard and gardens, guests can also access the ancient castle walls, which once extended all the way down towards the sea. These historic fortifications evoke the very origins of the name Castellammare, traditionally interpreted as “castle by the sea”.

From here, guests enter the heart of the thousand-year-old estate, welcomed by the warm and authentic medieval atmosphere of the Salone dei Camini (Fireplace Hall). Particularly atmospheric during the winter season, this historic room is ideally suited to banquets and formal dinners, accommodating up to 120 guests for corporate dinners and up to 100 guests for winter weddings.

The result is a unique journey through history, architecture, nature and spectacular landscapes, in which each space gradually reveals its character and beauty, transforming every event into an immersive experience through the centuries.

Historical Background

Built around the year 1000 by the Duke of Sorrento as a strategic stronghold overlooking the coast, the Castrum de Stabiis ad Mare played an important defensive role under the Angevins and Aragonese, and later became a fief of the Farnese family.

The castle was celebrated by Giovanni Boccaccio in the Decameron and immortalised during the 19th century by the masters of the School of Posillipo, who were inspired by its dramatic and romantic setting.

Following a meticulous restoration, the castle has been returned to its former splendour, combining its authentic historical identity with contemporary functionality and high-quality event facilities.

The castle has also been recognised by Vogue Italia among the five most beautiful castles in Italy.
